Zero Emission Tire Factory: Nokian Begins Shipments
Nokian Tyres has begun tire deliveries from its new zero-emission tire factory in Oradea, Romania. The initial shipments include winter and all-season tires and are heading to customers in Central Europe. Nokian positioned the Romania facility to serve Central and South European markets, focusing on passenger car tire production. The site operates as the company’s first full-scale zero CO₂ emission tire factory, using fossil-free energy and advanced tire manufacturing technology.
“This week marks the start of the tire deliveries from our factory in Oradea, Romania. The first truck loaded with Oradea-made tires left from the factory taking the tires to our distribution centers and later to our customer and consumers in Central and South Europe,” said Paolo Pompei, President and CEO of Nokian Tyres. “The factory will strengthen our ability to serve our consumers and customers in Central and South Europe and beyond and support our growth.”
Nokian Tyres also recently launched the Seasonproof 2, its first passenger car tire range produced at the Romania facility. The all-season range fits modern passenger cars, SUVs, and CUVs. It will reach Central and South European markets by autumn 2025.
The tire provides strong grip on snow and slush while maintaining a smooth ride in summer, Nokian said. It contains up to 38% renewable, recycled, and ISCC PLUS-certified materials. This makes it Nokian’s first commercial tire with a substantial share of sustainable content. Future tire launches for the region will also come from this factory, Nokian said.
Nokian broke ground on the Romania site in May 2023 and produced the first tire there by July 2024. The factory has earned multiple honors, including:
Nokian Tyres operates three production facilities globally—in Finland, the U.S., and now Romania. The company continues to hire in Bihor County to meet growing demand. The plant currently employs around 300 workers and plans to grow to over 500 at full capacity, Nokian said.
